You probably already have a pretty good idea of what a Mystery Shopper is. If you said, "It's a person that gets paid to secretly visit selected establishments to spy on them," ... you're half right.
Actually, as a Mystery Shopper you do secretly visit selected establishments, but you are not there to spy on them. You are not trying to catch them doing something wrong. In fact, you're not even looking for something right.
When you go into a store, restaurant, theme park, or on a cruise ship - or any business that values their customers, you are there for only one reason ... to evaluate your experience.
Okay, then why all the secrecy? Well, look at it this way. Do you think you would get the same service and treatment from a salesperson who knew you were there to evaluate him or her? Chances are you wouldn't.
We both know you'd probably get the "Red Carpet" treatment. Your objective is to go into a store and be treated as any other "everyday customer". Thus the secrecy.
As a Mystery Shopper you will receive many Free benefits. Free merchandise is only one. Dine at the finest restaurants, see the latest movies, take trips, cruises ... the possibilities are endless.

You may not receive an offer on every job interview, and likewise you may not receive an offer from every manufacturer, travel agency, restaurant, etc., you apply to. But just like a job interview, if you're turned down for some reason, don't take it personally. Just go on to your next source.
Remember, you are the main thread that keeps the Corporate Headquarters informed about how their employees are treating customers.
So if you've had a bad experience with a certain establishment in the past, and you feel you can't be objective in your evaluation, you must be professional enough to decline the assignment! This is no time for pay-backs.
Many businesses operate from the top floor of an ivory tower, and have absolutely no idea how their customers are being treated.
They have stores all over the country and you as a Mystery Shopper would perform a valuable service in keeping them in touch with their customers' needs. By having you (the average customer), report on your shopping experience, corporate leaders can better achieve uniformity throughout their chains. They are acutely aware that cleanliness, service and the quality of their products are essential to their success and growth.
If you take on your assignment with a professional attitude, and give Headquarters your loyalty by not revealing your findings to any other source - whether friends, competitors or other Marketing research companies, you can have a profitable, trusting, long lasting working relationship with them.
So remember, only report your findings to the company that is paying you!
Name your own hours.
If you are a housewife, mother, retiree, or part time worker, you will have the option of working around your schedule - unless you're required to be at a certain establishment at a precise time and day ... which is unusual. The exception would be if you were requested to visit an establishment only during happy hour, early bird specials, moonlight madness sales, etc.
If you're a parent with small children in pre-school or working part-time in another job, you can most likely request certain hours that are best for you.
Remember ... you are the link that keeps
Corporate Headquarters informed!
